Cincinnati’s regional tourism bureau has helped launch a new leadership program to help prepare youth and young adults for careers in the travel and hospitality sector.

The Cincinnati USA Institute for Hospitality Leadership is the brainchild of Cincinnati USA Convention & Visitors Bureau and its industry partners, the groups said Thursday. The creation of the institute was announced at a forum hosted as part of the tourism bureau’s multicultural initiative Vibe Cincinnati.

An Institute for Hospitality Leadership task force will work with businesses to identify talent needs and then work with local colleges to create a curriculum to help fill those jobs. The task force will also help local middle schools and high schools create curricula that could allow students to feed into the college program.  Read More

New proposal for Battelle property includes apartments, hotel, park

By Mark FerenchikThe Columbus Dispatch  •  Monday October 10, 2016 1:58 PM

As Battelle considers proposals for a good chunk of property near its Columbus campus, the latest idea would focus on retired Ohio State and Battelle employees.

But the Slane Company, and the former OSU trustee who runs it, may have come to the game too late.

Gahanna-based Slane is pitching the $200-million concept to Battelle, which wants to sell 15 acres just east of the Olentangy River so it can invest the proceeds into the Battelle campus.

Slane’s proposal calls for:

  • 380 apartments for retirees, including 80 assisted-living units
  • A 200-room hotel along W. 5th Avenue
  • A 128-unit market-rate apartment building
  • A 3.5-acre park at the southern part of the property. Harrison West residents had wanted to see some of the land preserved as a park.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The latest hotel restaurant-bar to open downtown is just for as much a getaway for locals as tourists. Yes, Parker’s Downtown in the Kimpton Schofield Hotel offers big-city chic — the kind of place where out-of-towners roll in with expense accounts. Hotels in Cleveland: Is the sky the limit?

September 18, 2016

By STAN BULLARD

The onslaught of new hotels in downtown Cleveland looks to keep on coming.

Surprisingly, following the run-up of hotels that expanded the room count 55% the last four years, particularly with the addition of the publicly funded 600-room Hilton Cleveland Downtown at the convention center, worry about oversupply seems to be a passing fancy. Real estate developers have plans for four more hotels, another 750 rooms, if they all get built. Or at least the worry is relegated to some wintry day when the Huntington Cleveland Convention Center and Global Center for Health Innovation is dark or when there’s little else to fill rooms in the city. And days might mount to weeks. Several hotel owners, operators and experts — but not all — expect the softening to be temporary as the city rebuilds its convention business from scratch.  Read More
